The Intersection of Faith & Science

Where the Bible & Science Meet

According to the Oxford Dictionary, science is the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment.  According to Hebrews 11:1, faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.   Science is based on observation while faith is being sure of something we do not see.  Science is not faith and faith cannot be developed through science.  But, that does not mean that faith and science do not intersect.  Where science leaves off, faith picks up.  For example, how did the world and universe begin?  Science cannot answer that question because it is not observable or repeatable.  Each person has to come to their own conclusion based on their faith.  In others words, being certain of what they do not see.  Some scientists are certain that the world came through naturalism (although no one observed it).  Other scientists are certain that God created the heavens and earth as described in the Bible. But, both scientists cross the intersection from science to faith.

What Glasses Do You Have On?

Every one wears a pair of glasses through which they see the world.  Their glasses color and define the world that they are looking at.  The person's biases or beliefs tell them how to interpret the objects and data that they are observing.  Sometimes these lens are called a bias or a "world view".  For example, if someone believes that there is no possibility of the existence of an omnipotent God, then they are going to interpret observable data (such as fossils, galaxies, and biological processes) consistent with their belief.  However, if someone believes that an all-powerful God does exist and revealed Himself in the Bible, then, although they are looking at the same data, they will come to a completely different conclusion to how those things came to be.

Faith & Science Courses & Events

To explore the intersection of faith & science and to help people try on a "new pair of glasses", from time to time we offer classes including an 8-part course to explore concepts in God's Word and look at various fields of science with a new world view as well as a 4-part National Park Testimony Series.  Classes can be provided online or in-person.  Check below to see if we are currently offering a class, or contact us to schedule a class for your church, community group, school, or camp / retreat.
